Hezbollah is a Lebanese Shia Islamist political party with an active paramilitary wing, founded in 1982 to resist the Israeli occupation of Lebanon. It is considered a terrorist organization by several Western countries, Israel, Gulf states, and the Arab League. While primarily active in the Middle East, particularly Lebanon and against Israel, there is no indication of Hezbollah having a direct role or significant presence in Iceland. However, an Icelandic former parliamentarian was involved in efforts to free an Israeli-Russian academic kidnapped by Kataeb Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militia in Iraq, highlighting an indirect connection to groups associated with the broader 'Axis of Resistance'.
