Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn, also known as the Independence Party, is a liberal-conservative political party in Iceland, founded on May 25, 1929, from the merger of the Conservative Party and the Liberal Party. It has historically been the largest and most influential party in Icelandic politics, advocating for economic liberalism, lower taxes, national sovereignty, and individual and employment freedom. The party has been a partner in 25 of the 35 governments since Iceland became a republic in 1944, and its leaders have often held the office of Prime Minister. The current chairman is Guðrún Hafsteinsdóttir, elected in 2025. The party is currently facing internal disputes, particularly concerning primary elections in Akureyri and candidate selection methods in Suðurnes.
