Vegagerðin

Stofnun

Vegagerðin, also known as the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (IRCA), is a government agency in Iceland responsible for the construction, management, and maintenance of the country's road network and harbors. Established in 1918, it plays a crucial role in developing and operating Iceland's transportation system, including approximately 13,000 km of main and countryside roads, as well as overseeing ferry operations and lighthouse responsibilities. While it no longer directly builds roads, Vegagerðin acts as an administrative organization, planning and tendering new projects and maintenance to ensure safe and sustainable transportation nationwide.
