The Icelandic Coast Guard (Landhelgisgæsla Íslands) is a law enforcement agency responsible for search and rescue, maritime safety and security surveillance, and law enforcement in the seas surrounding Iceland. Established in 1926, it also handles national defense tasks, including operating the NATO Iceland Air Defense System, explosive ordnance disposal, and hydrographic surveying. The organization plays a crucial role in protecting Iceland's extensive economic zone and ensuring the safety of mariners and aircraft in its search and rescue region.
