Atlantshafsbandalagið, also known as NATO, is an intergovernmental military alliance founded in 1949. Iceland is a founding member of NATO, uniquely contributing to the alliance through its strategic geographic location in the North Atlantic rather than a standing army. The organization recently confirmed that a missile launched from Iran towards Turkish airspace was intended to land in Turkey before being intercepted by NATO air defenses.
