Kiel is a city in northern Germany, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, and is known in Icelandic media primarily through its professional handball club, THW Kiel. THW Kiel is a highly successful team in the German Handball-Bundesliga and has featured notable Icelandic players and coaches, such as Guðjón Valur Sigurðsson, Aron Pálmarsson, and former head coach Alfreð Gíslason. The city of Kiel also has historical significance for Iceland as Denmark retained control of Iceland (along with Greenland and the Faroe Islands) after ceding Norway to Sweden in the Treaty of Kiel in 1814.
