Palestína is the Icelandic name for Palestine, a region in Southwest Asia along the eastern Mediterranean. Iceland was the first Western European country to formally recognize Palestine as an independent and sovereign state in 2011, establishing full diplomatic relations. Recently, Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, leader of the Miðflokkurinn (Centre Party) and former Prime Minister of Iceland, stated his opinion that there is no evidence that Israel intends to commit genocide in Palestine, a view that has been met with criticism in Icelandic media.
