Reykjavík is the capital and largest city of Iceland, located on the southern shore of Faxaflói bay in the southwest of the country. It is the world's northernmost capital of a sovereign state, with a population of around 139,000 as of 2025, and the surrounding Capital Region houses approximately 64% of Iceland's total population. The city is the commercial, industrial, and cultural center of Iceland, known for its geothermal heating and numerous public outdoor swimming pools. Its name, meaning "Smoky Bay," was inspired by the steam rising from local hot springs, and it was founded by Ingólfr Arnarson around AD 870.
