Hvalfjarðargöng

Staður

The Hvalfjarðargöng, also known as the Hvalfjörður Tunnel, is a subsea road tunnel in Iceland that is part of Route 1, the country's main ring road. Opened in 1998, it significantly shortens the travel distance between Reykjavík and the western and northern parts of Iceland by 45 kilometers, reducing travel time across the fjord from about an hour to 7 minutes. The tunnel is 5,770 meters long and reaches a depth of 165 meters below sea level. It was a milestone in Icelandic construction as the first private finance initiative without direct state funding, and ownership was transferred to the Icelandic Road Administration in 2018, making it toll-free.
